THE WRITTEN WORD IN AMERICA CAN BE TIED TO AN ESTERBOOK

Since 1858, Esterbrook writing instruments have played a significant role in the history of our great nation.  From the means by which we communicate to the historic laws and treaties signed into law by our greatest presidents, Esterbrook pens have been an integral part of American culture. 

Richard Esterbrook arrived from Cornwall, England in 1858 with a dream to establish the first Steel Nib Pen Company in America.  He settled in Camden New Jersey where he built a small factory, the first of its kind in America. Using novel technology which he developed for producing steel Pens of marketable quality along with an aggressive marketing strategy, The Esterbrook Steel Manufacturing Co, quickly grew to become the largest pen company in the world. By the turn of the century, the Esterbrook factory employed over 400 workers and produced 600,00 pens daily.

From its early beginning’s the Esterbrook brand became synonymous with writing. The phrase “Can I borrow your Esterbrook” became a common question at schools across the country, as our nation’s children learned how to write with an Esterbrook in hand.

In 1933, the company began production of Plastic Fountain Pens utilizing a unique integrated nib and feed unit called the “Re-new -Point”. This easy to replace nib unit allowed consumers to choose from over 400 nib styles that could be interchanged. This nib replacement system separated Esterbrook from their competitors, as the Esterbrook pens and nib units set the standard for writing in America.

Esterbrook became known as the “Pen of Presidents” having been used by Presidents Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson as the official White House signer. Many of our nation’s most important documents were signed into law with an Esterbrook Pen.

Esterbrook Pens also played a role in American Culture as many of America’s most iconic Illustrators used Esterbrook pens exclusively to draw their famous Characters.  They include Charles M. Schulz, creator of the “Peanuts” Cartoon strip and the Disney artist Carl Banks the creator of Donald Duck.

One can say that the written history of America since 1858 and the history of Esterbook go hand in hand. The brands contribution to the growth and vitality of our great nation is on display in the Smithsonian Institute with an Esterbrook pen as one of the “101 things that made America”

The Esterbrook Legacy continues today, as with the same core values established in 1858, to make pens of the highest quality which to be used and enjoyed by all who value communicating with the “written word”.
